Ebi Smolarek, the fleet-footed striker who led Poland's attack in qualifying, entered the European Championship with a load of expectations on his shoulders. He didn't live up to them.
In a sign of how small an impact the striker made at the tournament, Poland coach Leo Beenhakker dropped Smolarek from the starting lineup for his team's must-win match against Croatia in favor of Wojciech Lobodzinski. Smolarek came on in the 55th minute, shortly after Ivan

Klasnic scored to give Croatia the lead. Smolarek immediately got his first touch - a touch that typified the whole tournament.

Making a run down the left side, the Racing Santander forward crossed the ball into the box. The Croatia defense promptly cleared it, and Poland started all over again. Poland lost 1-0, and was knocked out of the tournament.

- Several of us important players were not in top form, and those were exactly the players who normally give us something extra and are making the difference during qualification - Beenhakker said, naming Smolarek as chief among those players. - I don't blame them for that. I know

they came here with a lot of ambition and they did everything to do a good job.

Things were supposed to be different for Smolarek. He scored nine goals in 10 qualifying matches to guide Poland to its first ever European Championship. He scored two goals in a 10-minute stretch to push Poland past Portugal 2-1 in a qualifying match that was proclaimed the country's greatest football victory in decades. He also scored a hat trick against Kazakhstan and two more goals against Belgium.

But he never found that form at Euro 2008. In Poland's opener against Germany, the undersized Smolarek was overpowered by the German's big, physical back line. Against Austria, he was largely invisible, while versus Croatia on Monday he couldn't lift a Poland attack that struggled to find any holes in the Croatia defense.

His sparkling form in qualifications saw him become the face of football in Poland on TV and billboards, but he denied the huge expectations coming into the tournament acted as a burden. - There were not a weight on me - Smolarek said. - I think the whole team didn't show what we wanted to and thought this would turn out different. It was tough, and now we're going home.
