"Leo Beenhakker will keep his job as the head coach of the Polish national team at least until November 2009", says Michał Listkiewicz, the chairman of the Polish Football Association (PZPN)

As the Polish national team is training in Bad Waltersdorf before their last Euro 2008 Group B match against Croatia, the chairman of the PZPN praises the ability of his team.

"The football played by the Polish team isn't as weak as everybody says. I prefer to listen to opinions of true, respectable pundits with authority, such as Franz Beckenbauer, Roy Hodgson or Jozsef Venglos, and they all see improvements in our play since the World Cup in 2006", Listkiewicz says and denies gossip about the impending dismission of the national coach. "Leo Beenhakker's job is safe and sound at least until November 2009 - and we hope to automatically prolong his contract after Poland's advance to the WC 2010 finals", he adds.

Like the Polish footballers, the PZPN boss' optimism before Monday's game against Croatia is limited. If Poland wins the match and Austria defeats Germany, Beenhakker's team will play in the quarter-finals.

"There is some hope left. Let's not rely on other teams in the group, but defeat Croatia in style and give some joy to the fans", Listkiewicz says and adds that the Austrians are anxious to defeat Germany. "It's been a long time since they did it [20 years; Austria defeated Germany 3:2 at the World Cup in 1978 in Argentina - MN], but history likes to repeat itself. And I don't think we should annoy ourselves with things that we don't have any influence on", reminds PZPN's boss.

Listkiewicz declined to comment on the decision of the English referee Howard Webb, who ordered a controversial penalty against Poland in the last minute of the match versus Austria. "I can't comment as I am the vice-chairman of UEFA's Refereeing Commitee. All protests against that decision will fail, because the UEFA doesn't concern itself with protests against decisions of match officials", he explained.

The PZPN's boss didn't make a prediction of the score of the match against Croatia. "The opponents have a bigger footballing potential, but - as the Greeks showed four years ago - the team sheet doesn't show everything. Our team had injury trouble, and we don't have the comfort that e.g. Holland has; when one of the Dutch players is injured, coach van Basten can substitute him with a player of the same class, or with an even better one", Listkiewicz concluded.
